In 2001, a public art project to promote cultural tourism, showcased the artistic Southwest andraised money for other organizations began in New Mexico. A sculptor from Santa Fe, Star Liana York was asked to create two original pony designs; a standing horse and a running horse. More than 150 life size resin-cast horse forms were created. Artists from all over the state transformed the horses into equine masterpieces.
The horses were displayed throughout New Mexico for viewing. This became the Trail of the Painted Ponies. Collectible size figurines have been made of the originals. Not all of the replica ponies are available for collection. Every six months, a new set is released. Ponies are also retired or put out to pasture at different times.
The project has benefited many organizations and brought millions of dollars of revenue to New Mexico.
